The artist has given the complete sum of his £25,000 award winnings to the MVT, which operates to protect the Britain's independent music venues.

Fender was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release the album was chosen as the best record of the past year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues had in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also took part, generating over £100k on his live tour to support 38 small stages across Britain.

The donation supported venues that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Some locations received funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that helped musicians and audiences.

"The idea that funds from concerts in large arenas helps the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to give his award funds to good deeds.

In the band won the award in the mid-90s for their album their work, vocalist the singer announced that the act would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her award between a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," she shared with a publication.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the local youth club that developed their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was diagnosed the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success touched the lives of others."

Recently, the trust revealed it had saved several local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the second in the city were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
