Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."

To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
