The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
