The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
