British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Documentary Ruled a 'Major' Infringement of Media Standards, Declares UK Media Regulator

The British broadcaster committed a "major breach" of broadcasting rules by omitting to mention that the narrator of a programme about the Gaza situation was the offspring of a Hamas official, as determined by UK media regulator Ofcom.

An probe by the media regulator into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the documentary was "substantially inaccurate".

The BBC's director general had earlier expressed regret, stating there had been "a major oversight in relation to accuracy".

The regulator has instructed the corporation to transmit a peak-time declaration about its conclusions.

"As this represents a major infringement of our code, we are instructing the broadcaster to broadcast a announcement of our determinations against it on the BBC's second channel at 21:00, with a timing to be determined," it said.

'Potential to Damage Trust'

The regulator's announcement said: "Our probe found that the programme's failure to disclose that the voice's father occupied a role in the Hamas-administered government was significantly deceptive.

"It meant that the public did not have critical information which may have been highly relevant to their judgment of the narrator and the details he provided.

"Credibility is at the core of the connection between a broadcaster and its public, especially for a national broadcasting corporation such as the public broadcaster.

"This failing had the possibility to damage the exceptionally strong degrees of trust that audiences would have placed in a BBC factual programme about the Israel-Gaza war."

The documentary was withdrawn from iPlayer in last February after the presenter's personal associations came to light, and in the month of July an corporation's own inquiry found it breached the organization's journalistic standards on factual correctness.

A BBC spokesperson said: "The authority's determination is in accordance with the results of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a serious error in the programme in relation to the broadcaster's journalistic policies on truthfulness, which reflects regulation 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.

"We expressed regret for this and we accept the regulator's ruling in full. We will comply with the directive as soon as the schedule and language are determined."
